By David Casper 11/28/2017, 12:15pm EST

This game was one for the ages!

The 42nd Annual Jim Bagdon Cup (formerly Warminster Cup) ice hockey game between the Archbishop Wood Vikings and William Tennent Panthers was played at 7pm on November 22nd in front of a lot of passionate fans at the Bucks County Ice Sports Center. The game was in honor of Gerry Grandzol, a '97 graduate of Wood and captain of the Wood Ice Hockey Team, who died tragically on September 7th, 2017. This game was one for the ages!

The Vikings started off strong with Brayden Gyza scoring the only goal in the first period assisted by Justin Carrelli and Ben Doran. With solid puck control in the offensive zone, Ben Doran scored the Vikings second goal assisted by Justin Carrelli. Wood's offensive line consisting of Tommy Hill, Ty Thornton, and Andrew Boyle applied good pressure, but were kept at bay with solid defensive play by the Panthers and excellent goaltending by Eric Lineman. Tennent answered a few minutes later in the period with a goal by Chad Cartwright assisted by Jon Kreider. Then, Ben Doran scored his second goal on a power play assisted by Justin Carrelli and Brayden Gyza to make it 3-1 Vikings at the end of the second period.

The Vikings defense consisting of Ryan Kinney, Nick Romano, Sean Boehm, and Marisa Denucci were doing a good job keeping the puck out of the zone. Panthers Tom Hartenstein took advantage of an opportunity and scored to make it 3-2 in the third period. Ben Doran answered with his third goal and hat trick assisted by Justin Carrelli, who contributed to all the Vikings' goals. This expanded the Vikings lead to 4-2 with 6:43 remaining in the third period.. The Panthers were hungry and determined to come back with Chad Cartwright scoring on a power play. On the final face off in the Vikings zone with only one second left on the clock, Captain Bobby Markus miraculously scored for Tennent to tie the game at 4-4.

A shootout would determine who claims the legendary cup for the 2017-18 season. After four failed scoring attempts by both teams, Vikings' Captain Ryan Kinney scored high blocker side on Panthers' goalie Eric Lineman who played very well all game. Determined to extend the shootout, Panthers' Chad Cartwright came storming in on Vikings' senior goalie David Casper. David was up for the challenge and made a "Go-Go-Gadget" pad save to secure the cup for the Vikings. Congratulations to the Wood Ice Hockey Team for a fantastic finish!

AB Wood @ Lansdale Catholic Nov. 3rd Game Summary

By David Casper 11/06/2017, 12:15pm EST

Two evenly matched teams battle it out on the ice!

The Wood Vikings Ice Hockey team was ready for a tough battle against the Lansdale Catholic (LC) Crusaders at the Hatfield Green Ice Rink, the coldest place in town.  Freshman Andrew Boyle started the regular season off with a nice goal assisted by Justin Carrelli and Ben Doran.  Then Jimmy Casper scored to make it 2-0.  The Crusaders fought right back with a goal by Nick Sexton 40 seconds later to make it 2-1 Wood at the end of the first period.

The second period was evenly matched with defenseman Sean Boehm working hard to keep the Crusader’s offense in check.   Marissa DeNucci and Assistant Captain Nick Romano also played well on defense to help limit the shots on net.  Robert Schimony scored the only goal of the second period and scored again early in the third period to make is 3-2 LC with 12:35 left in the game.

Assistant Captain Tommy Hill answered by scoring a goal assisted by Ben Doran, who was setting the table for his teammates the whole game. Wood’s holy goalie David Casper was using his size and glove to stop pucks until Nick Sexton beat him by scoring again for LC with just under 6 minutes left in the game.  A few minutes later David’s younger brother Jimmy Casper shot low far post and scored with a nice assist by Brayden Gyza to tie the game at 4-4 with 3:46 left to play.

Freshman Justin Carrelli saved his best for last when he scored the game winning goal with only 19 seconds left in the game, assisted by Ben Doran.  What a finish!

Next week the Vikings play a talented Roman Catholic team on Friday, November 10th, 7:40pm at Northeast Skate Zone.
